Thoughts on the Ceiling - Nautics (review)

‘Thoughts on the Ceiling’ by Nautics is a song about waiting, and resonates with anyone in our modern, restless state. It is gritty yet optimistic, disguising something tender with a bright electric beat and a throwback to dance tunes of past decades. Although the song is new, it manages to traverse time and genre, and sounds almost recognisable, as if you already understand the lyrics and just haven’t heard them yet. This song appears at the right time for a lot of us; we’re all waiting for life to return to normal, and waiting for change to come at the same time. Our relationships are harder to navigate than ever. Despite all of this, we cling to hope, which makes itself known in the song with a charming subtlety. The band themselves hail from New York, which is unsurprising with their clear city sound. As a thank-you to the place that inspired them, all proceeds from this song go toward the Food Bank for New York City. Nautics seem to encompass a certain sad-boy-cool irony that is both endearing and bold, and their new song comes from the heart.
